Mindful Play

This unit of learning in the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) focuses on supporting independence and healthy living among our 3-5 year olds.

Two strands of learning are entitled ‘Move, Sit and Stretch’ and ‘Breathing and Laughter’.
Activities seek to improve focus and concentration, increase calm and reduce stress or anxiety.

Students enjoyed yoga and pilates during the week and practised stretching and moving as well as breathing techniques.

One suggestion for teachers is to have a calm space where students can sit and read or practise some of the techniques shared. This is very much in keeping with our Wellbeing programme exercised across the school. Students and teachers can prepare themselves by reciting the following meditation poem:

Pebble Meditation
Breathing in, I see myself as a FLOWER Breathing out, I feel FRESH
Breathing in, I see myself as a MOUNTAIN Breathing out, I feel SOLID
Breathing in, I see myself as STILL WATER Breathing out, I REFLECT things as they are Breathing in, I see myself as SPACE
Breathing out, I feel FREE.

Fun with numbers

Maths in Year 1 has been focusing on students learning to recognise and match numbers in words and digits. A variety of activities, encouraging them to read and write the numbers, made the learning fun. At the same time, the children’s fine motor skills are being assessed and developed.

Gong Xi Fa Cai

As we approach the new lunar year, the students have been learning about greetings during Chinese New Year and the culture surrounding it.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Chinese families a healthy and prosperous New Year. To all others, I hope you have safe and pleasant holiday.

See you on Monday 11th February.
