18 OCTOBER 2019 - MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
Primary
It has been an action packed week with a major event taking place in each and every primary year group.
Year 1
It was great to see so many parents at our Year 1 Exit Point (From A-B). The parents came into school and the children shared their learning about their transport themed IPC unit. There were 6 ‘stations’ set up with parents participating in each station playing the games the children used to demonstrate the learning.
Year 2
Year 2 students went off to Super Park on Wednesday. Field trips have become an essential part of our learning as it enables our students to make connections to their learning whilst in a practical environment setting. During their IPC Geography task, they learned to read and design maps of familiar locations. It was amazing to see the students, without any hesitation, pick up a map at the indoor park and start planning their route to the activities. They were also able to practise and make visible the skills they have been practising in the classroom through their IPC unit 'Circus Coming To Town', which involves physical movements showcased at circuses.
Year 3
Year 3 had their Exit Point (Generation Game) on Thursday which involved a tremendous community spirit. The parents came into school and setup traditional games that they used to play when they were younger and allowed the children to play. We had some excellent and tricky games from different cultures, including but not limited to Malaysian, Korean, Chinese and Western. I would like to thank the parents for taking their time to set up and run these games, it was really appreciated by all that attended.
Year 4
This week saw two groups take a field trip to Rimba Ilmu (Forest of Knowledge) on the Wednesday and Friday. Situated on a beautiful site at the University of Malaya in KL the children learned all about the diversity of plants and animals found in Malaysia. The children visited the museum, the gardens as well as the conservatory and learned all about why trees are important and how we can use some plants for medicinal purposes. I learned that the King Cobra is the most dangerous snake in Malaysia… but luckily we didn’t see one!
Year 5
My favourite IPC learning unit is Bake It! This involves my favourite thing in the world – food… and as a European, bread is like my rice. The children (and teachers) have had a great time this week making bread to understand the change of state of matter as well as experimenting with yeast to make the dough rise. Science has been built into the unit as well as some delicious tasting!
Year 6
Our oldest students in our Primary School have almost finished their time with us before progressing onto the Secondary School. Learning in TIS Puchong Secondary School will be just as fun as the Primary School, just a little different as there are specialist teachers for each subject rather than the homeroom teacher. For students, this takes a little getting used to so on Wednesday we ran a transition day where the children spent the whole day in Year 7. This involved them taking Secondary School classes, changing classrooms between lessons, and eating with the older children in the cafeteria. The feedback from the children was that they had a great time and I hope that it reduced some of the nerves about moving up to Year 7.
