30 July 2021 - Closing Out Term 2 With Virtual Science Fair
30 July 2021 - Closing Out Term 2 With Virtual Science Fair
As we have reached the end of Term 2, I know that the journey to this point has been one where we have been continually asking questions about whether this pandemic would continue to stop us from returning to the school campus for our lessons and exams. However, we have also continued to prove how robust and rigorous our response has been to this pandemic’s constraints. Excellent learning experiences have continued to be our drive and focus and it’s great to share with you just a couple of things that I can highlight from these past few weeks.

We have recently concluded our ‘Virtual Science Faire’ and here are the results;

1) Winners for Category 1: Young Scientist Award
1st Place: Ayush (7U) - Effect of Solutes on the electrical conductivity of water
2nd Place: Maya, Misaki & Charlotte (7U) - Filtration
3rd Place: Chan Weng Lok (7H) - Boiling temperature of water and oil

2) Winners for Category 2: Young Inventors Award
1st Place: Bede Lau Jia Min (9U) - Surgical Mask
2nd Place: Kaanchana (10 P) - App for emergency
3rd Place: Eann (9N) - Renewable source of protein

3) WInners for Audience Choice Award (with the highest voting numbers)
Category 1: Ayush (7U) - Effect of Solutes on the electrical conductivity of water
Category 2: Bede Lau Jia Min (9U) - Surgical Mask

4) Guess and win challenge winners: The answer is 3.3 kg (^^,)
a) Student: Adam (8U) - Answer : 3.4 kg
                    Haw Pei Yi (9O) - Answer : 3.5 kg
b) Teacher: Ms. Vasuge - Answer: 3.8 kg

Congratulations to all winners. It was a superb event and a great thank you to all staff, especially Ms. Intan, who organized and supervised the whole event.

Over the past few weeks we have also had a number of House events and here are the results from these;

TISPC HOUSE EVENT: International Chocolate Day Cooking Challenge!
1st Place: Blue > 115 points (24 participants + 1 teacher: Ms. Anita!!!)
2nd Place: Yellow > 70 points (24 participants)
3rd Place: Green > 65 points (20 participants)
4th Place: Red > 60 points (22 participants)

We have also had the opportunity to participate in the Family-Friendly Game Design Challenge and I know many have also enjoyed getting involved with the TIS Puchong Virtual Olympics 2021.

I know that there are still house points being counted but with what we have so far the standings look like this;

1st: Blue (1232 points)
2nd: Yellow (992 points)
3rd: Red (990 points)
4th: Green (926 points)

Blue House are looking strong at the end of this term, but with still one term to go, all this can change. I need to again thank all the teachers and parents involved in creating and participating in these enjoyable experiences that continually help us to become a united community for ongoing quality learning during these difficult times.

I also had the opportunity to chat with Year 6 students and parents over the past two weeks and it was great to have the opportunity to share with you about the plans for secondary and especially to share with the year 6 learners about the exciting opportunities that will come their way soon as they start to transition into the Secondary school.

Sadly we do have to say goodbye to two of our teachers this term Ms. Katherine Cooper who has led our English department for the last couple of years and to Ms. Azrina who has been teaching Science with us. We would like to thank you both for all your hard work and commitment over the past couple of years and wish you well in your next adventure.

Finally, I would like to thank all our learners who again have shown perseverance and determination in this ongoing difficult time. We are hoping to hear that in Term 3 we will be heading back onto the school campus for our lessons, where face-to-face learning will bring back that extra dynamic to the learning environment. We will obviously keep you all updated as the guidelines for this become more clear.
