Back To School: Transitioning With Confidence

The New Norm
With thermometers in hand, sanitizers at the ready and social distancing being practiced, we are in a “new norm” as society recovers from this Covid-19 pandemic. We understand the emotional challenge parents are facing with regards to ensuring their children are sufficiently informed, and practicing caution without living in fear.

Educating Children About Living in the “New Norm”
With all that is available in the news, it is becoming difficult to manage pandemic related information. We encourage parents to talk to their children using information that is both relevant and age-appropriate. As such, put an emphasis on content that is encouraging such as the recovery of others from the virus, or resuming day-to-day activities such as sport. This will then maintain emotional positivity rather than the bleak and bland statistics we are bombarded with on a daily basis. Reminders about social distancing practices are also important for their safety. Children have support within the school and they should not be afraid of approaching teachers or counsellors about any physical, emotional or academic difficulties they might have.

With the correct information, your child should be aware of the actions they must practice to ensure their safety and that of others. Acting upon social distancing guidelines is just the first step, living in the new norm requires practicing new hygiene habits such as regular hand-washing and wearing masks.

Communication - The Key To Successful and Safe Transitioning.
Communication is of vital importance when helping to manage the emotional strains of living in this new norm. Establishing an open channel of communication where emotions can be shared without fear of reprimand is vital for a child’s emotional health as they start back at school. Parents should speak to their child and allow them the space to express their concerns and even assurances. This two-way communication will foster a sense of ownership in their own safety while at the same time maintaining healthy psychological states within the family.

Similarly, we encourage parents to communicate with their child about academic matters, remembering that the purpose of embracing this new norm is so they can continue to grow holistically as a learner. Taking note from our academic team, parents may reserve a time to reflect with their child, the learning that has taken place during the day, asking questions such as “what does it mean?” or “tell me more” will aid their child’s focus towards learning.

Support From The School
Our school team will continue to provide support that is up to date with the current guidelines, with the addition of counselling and academic support should your child require additional assistance during these trying times. Parents and children should not hesitate to speak to their teachers or counsellors if any such need should arise so that we may all meet the challenge together.
