10 June 2022 - Learning About Their Role In Sustainability

10 June 2022 - Learning About Their Role In Sustainability

This week has been Oceans week and it has been superb to see the involvement of the students in CSR work, learning about the Oceans, and their role in the sustainability of this vital resource.

As part of our Care.mvmt (“Care Movement”) project we have been spending time raising awareness of the oceans and the enormous importance of the seas to our planet. Respect for our planet is fundamental to the future of all of us.

Some interesting fun facts that I have picked up this week about our oceans
 - Over 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in ocean
 - 94% of the living creature on Earth live in the oceans
 - Humans have only explored about 5% of the oceans. We have more detailed maps of the Moon and Mars than of most of the oceans.
 - The Pacific ocean is almost the same size as all the land on the Earth!
 - The deepest part of the ocean is the Mariana trench which is 11km deep. The highest mountain on Earth is also in the Pacific ocean and is nearly 2km taller than Mount Everest.  More people have been to the moon than to the bottom of the Mariana trench
 - Oceans produce over 70% of the oxygen through marine plants and algae
 - Most of our planet is dark as light can only penetrate to about 100 m

On the sad but true side
 - 8 million pieces of plastic enter the oceans every day
 - Over 1 million seabirds and animals die each year as a result of plastic in the oceans
 - The pacific garbage patch is larger than Malaysia!
 - Each person uses on average 150 plastic bags each year and many of these end up in the ocean

Malaysia is surrounded by oceans and they are a very important part of the food we eat and also our tourism business. We all need to do our part to protect the oceans before it is too late.

Care.mvmt (“Care Movement”) is an initiative in all Taylor’s Schools to further our RECIPE core values. Care.mvmt has three parts; Self, Others and World. In the last few years, you will have seen the school involved in all of these aspects of respect and care. Care.mvmt allows the school to focus the attention of all our community (students, staff and parents) to the importance of looking after ourselves, and others and to the increasingly important aspect of sustainability and looking after our planet. You will see more references to Care.mvmt as the weeks and months pass, as we involve our students in projects and initiatives surrounding Respect and Care.
