English & Mandarin Mastery

Taylor’s Bilingual
Programme

Our Bilingual
Programme

At Taylor’s International School Kuala Lumpur, our Bilingual Programme gives young learners the best start by developing fluency in both English and Mandarin from Reception to Year 2 (ages 4–7). We believe early mastery of multiple languages opens doors to a world of opportunities, equipping students with the communication skills and cultural understanding needed to succeed in today’s interconnected global society.

Teaching & Learning

Bilingual Programme

Taylor’s Bilingual Programme offers a rigorous, immersive dual-language education rooted in internationally recognised curricula. Starting in Reception, students receive six hours of English instruction and five hours of Mandarin tuition each week, supported by a bilingual delivery of core subjects such as Mathematics, the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the Arts.

Reception to Year 2

Aged 4 - 7

English lessons follow the UK curriculum using Red Rose Phonics and Read Into Writing, while Mandarin follows the Chinese Made Easy syllabus, accelerated for bilingual learners, accelerated for bilingual learners compared to mainstream Mandarin classes. Mathematics is taught using the UK’s White Rose Maths Programme, with explanations provided in either language as needed. Students also receive 2.5 hours of Bahasa Malaysia each week, ensuring competence in the national language. Specialist subjects like Music and Physical Education are taught in English by specialist teachers, while all other areas adopt the bilingual approach.

No Extra Charges for Bilingual

The Bilingual Programme is offered at no additional cost to our standard tuition fees, making it the most accessible and affordable bilingual education option in Kuala Lumpur. Families can give their children the lifelong advantage of learning both English and Mandarin without the financial burden often associated with specialised language programmes.

Cultural Enrichment

Students immerse themselves in the heritage, values and traditions of both Chinese and global cultures, building respect, understanding and appreciation for the richness of Eastern and Western perspectives. This cultural awareness helps them develop into open-minded, empathetic individuals ready to thrive in diverse international communities.

Mastering Mandarin with Confidence

Students benefit from five hours of dedicated Mandarin instruction each week, delivered by specialist teachers who focus on building strong speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. This consistent, immersive approach not only boosts fluency and accuracy but also develops the confidence to use Mandarin in real-life situations, both inside and outside the classroom.

The Cognitive Edge of Being Bilingual

Bilingualism enhances cognitive development, sharpening skills such as problem-solving, creativity and critical thinking. Research shows that bilingual learners often demonstrate greater mental flexibility and improved memory, enabling them to process information more effectively. These advantages extend far beyond language learning, empowering students to excel academically and adapt to new challenges.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Taylor’s International School Bilingual Programme is an immersive English-Mandarin setting offering students a rigorous and enriching education. It builds strong language proficiency in both languages, academic excellence and intercultural understanding. Through integrated learning, it equips students with essential skills to succeed in a globalised world.

The programme provides balanced exposure to both English and Mandarin. From Reception, an experienced bilingual teacher delivers six hours of dedicated English lessons and five hours of dedicated Mandarin lessons each week, with the remaining lessons taught using a bilingual approach. In Years 1 and 2, students continue with six hours of English and five hours of Mandarin each week, taught separately by an English specialist and a Mandarin specialist. Together, they also deliver key subjects through a co-teaching approach, ensuring concepts and knowledge are reinforced in both languages. Specialist subjects such as PE and Music are taught by dedicated subject teachers.

For dedicated Mandarin lessons, students will follow the Chinese Made Easy syllabus used across Taylor’s Primary School. However, Bilingual Programme students will progress through the content at a faster pace due to the increased number of Mandarin lessons compared to their mainstream peers.

In English, students will follow the UK Curriculum, utilising the Red Rose Phonics scheme and Read Into Writing. For Maths, they will also follow the UK’s White Rose Maths scheme, with key concepts and instructions provided in either English or Mandarin as needed for better understanding. Additionally, the entire programme is aligned with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), ensuring a well-rounded, globally relevant education.

The Bilingual Programme is designed for Primary students starting from Reception to Year 2 and will progressively expand to higher year groups in the coming years.

While some familiarity with English and Mandarin can be helpful, it is not a requirement. This rigorous programme is designed to develop strong proficiency in both languages, and we welcome children of all language backgrounds.

Yes, students applying to the Bilingual Programme will have an interview to assess their current skills in both English and Mandarin.
