More Than a Sports Day: How TIS Puchong Builds Confidence Beyond the Classroom

Winning isn’t measured only by medals. At Taylor’s International School Puchong (TIS Puchong), it’s measured by the confidence students discover, the friendships they build and the courage to keep trying. Across four action-packed days, more than 1,500 students from Early Years to Year 11 experienced the school’s annual Sports Day, where teamwork, resilience and leadership were developed through meaningful sporting experiences.

More Than Just Competition

Sports Day is about far more than crossing the finish line. Every activity is intentionally designed to help students discover their strengths, challenge themselves and experience the value of teamwork in a supportive environment.

As Director of Sports, Mark Kelly explains, “Sports Day is about much more than results. We want every student to leave with a sense of achievement, whether that comes from winning an event, setting a personal best, encouraging a teammate or stepping outside their comfort zone. Success isn’t measured only by medals but by effort, resilience and the willingness to keep improving.”

That philosophy came to life throughout the event as students celebrated not only victories on the field, but also the perseverance, teamwork and encouragement displayed in every challenge.

Learning Through Every Challenge

Every activity was thoughtfully designed to help students develop age-appropriate skills, build confidence and discover the value of sport in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Secondary – Through football, basketball, netball, dodgeball, badminton and ultimate frisbee, Secondary students developed strategic thinking, teamwork and leadership while learning to perform under pressure and support one another in competitive settings.

Key Stage 2 – Students strengthened their resilience, coordination and determination through athletics events including sprints, relays and obstacle courses, challenging themselves to improve with every race and celebrate both personal bests and team success.

Early Years and Key Stage 1 – Fun races, obstacle courses and team challenges nurtured confidence, coordination and a love for being active, while introducing the importance of participation, perseverance and positive sportsmanship from an early age.
Across every age group, Houses rallied behind one another, creating a vibrant atmosphere where every achievement, personal best and act of encouragement was celebrated together.

Students Share What They Learned

While competition added excitement to the event, the greatest lessons came through the experiences students shared on and off the field.

For Year 11 student Yelyzaveta, Sports Day was an opportunity to challenge herself while strengthening the bonds of teamwork.

I enjoy Sports Day because it challenges me to do my best and gives me the chance to win medals. Competing in three running events and three team events taught me the importance of trusting my teammates and working together, because that’s what helps us succeed,” said Yelyzaveta (Year 11G)

For fellow Year 11 Coulson, Sports Day was equally about bringing the school community together.

Sports Day brings the whole school together. It’s a chance to make new friends, compete and showcase our skills. Winning the relay race for the third consecutive year was a proud moment for our team. Beyond the competition, sport helps us develop leadership, take responsibility and work together, while allowing us to learn beyond the classroom. I think everyone should experience sport.

Their experiences perfectly capture what TIS Puchong aims to achieve through sport, developing confident, responsible and well-rounded young people.

A Community That Cheers Together

Sports Day was made even more memorable by the unwavering support and enthusiastic participation of the wider TIS Puchong community. Beyond cheering from the sidelines, parents took to the field in events including tug of war, relay races and giant volleyball, while Early Years families enjoyed parent-child activities that celebrated teamwork, encouragement and the joy of participating together.

Parents also organised food and merchandise stalls, adding to the vibrant carnival atmosphere enjoyed by students, families and staff.

Whether competing, volunteering or cheering from the sidelines, every member of the TIS Puchong community played a role in creating an environment where students felt encouraged, supported and celebrated.

More than a sporting event, Sports Day strengthened friendships, fostered meaningful connections and created lasting memories, reinforcing the spirit of belonging that defines the TISPC community.

While trophies may be lifted at the end of the day, the character, friendships and life skills students build are what truly last.
