High School Musical Jr. Takes the Stage at TIS Puchong

The stage was set, and our students were ready to shine! Our school auditorium came alive with the colour, music and excitement of High School Musical Jr., another spectacular production brought to life by our dedicated Performing Arts team. Across two exciting nights, our Secondary students delivered show-stopping numbers and bold performances, bringing their creativity, confidence and teamwork together for a show to remember.

Bringing the Show to Life

Behind every show-stopping moment was a much bigger story of commitment, creativity and teamwork. Long before the curtain went up, our students were already hard at work bringing the world of East High to life.

Rehearsals kicked off in January, followed by approximately 130 hours of singing, dancing, acting, and bringing every piece of the production together. With 55 cast members and 14 backstage crew, High School Musical Jr. was a true team effort, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Beyond rehearsals, students and teachers worked together on costumes, props, sets, lighting, sound and choreography, each playing a part in transforming our auditorium into the colourful world of East High.

The scale of the final show was a reflection of everything that went into creating it. Guided by teachers and supported by the wider school community, students brought their individual talents together to create something they could all be proud of — a celebration of what can happen when creativity, commitment and collaboration are given the space to thrive.

When the Curtain Falls, The Learning Stays

Putting on a production this big takes more than knowing your lines and hitting the right notes. With so many students working towards one show, there were different ideas to navigate, problems to solve and plenty of moments when the team simply had to find a way forward together. That’s where some of the most valuable learning happened.

For Year 10 cast member Charmaine, the experience became a lesson in communication, patience and understanding. “I’ve learned that everyone learns and works at a different pace, and that has taught me to be more understanding and patient with others. When we had different opinions, we learned to talk things through and find a way forward together. I’ve also made new friends and become even closer to the friends I already had.”

In many ways, the production offered a glimpse of what lies ahead: working with different people, taking responsibility, adapting when plans change and finding solutions together. The performance may end, but those lessons stay. Each challenge helped our students become more resourceful, resilient and ready to take on whatever comes next.

Every Role Matters

The magic did not stop when students stepped off stage. Some of the best moments were happening behind the curtain too!

Between super quick scene changes, last-minute checks and making sure every entrance happened at just the right moment, our amazing student crew members were right at the heart of the production, making sure every second was spot on. They don’t call this home of Taylor’s Lightning for nothing! Different roles, same show, and the same excitement of bringing it all together.

For Year 9 student Ze Hin, the experience became an opportunity to connect, collaborate and find his voice within the team. “My favourite thing about the musical is our collaboration, communication and teamwork. After the show, I felt that my communication skills have gotten better, and I feel happier and proud of myself.”

The positive takeaways were not limited to centre stage. Whether performing under the lights or working behind the curtain, students shared the excitement, challenges and friendships that came with creating something together. Every role counted, every contribution mattered, and every student walked away with their own memories of the show.

A Performance that Transforms You

And when the curtain rose, all that hard work burst into life! In front of an audience of 700 across two nights, months of rehearsals became energetic musical numbers, colourful scenes, and plenty of Wildcat spirit.

For Mr Lewis, Head of Drama, watching everything finally come together was an immensely proud moment. His favourite part was not simply seeing students deliver the final performance, but seeing how far they had come. “I feel immensely proud. I feel that six months of hard work has paid off and I’m just so happy for the kids because they did an amazing job. My favourite part is seeing the transformations and seeing how drama and theatre literally transform these young people’s lives. The confidence that it gives them, the community that it gives them, it’s a beautiful thing to create and to watch.”

And perhaps that is what made High School Musical Jr. particularly meaningful. The finished show gave students their moment to shine, but the real experience was everything that happened along the way — finding their voice, working through challenges, forming friendships and discovering just how much they could achieve when they came together as one.

What a show, and what a journey! High School Musical Jr. was more than a fantastic Secondary production; it was a celebration of what students can discover beyond the classroom. Through opportunities in Wider Learning, our students are encouraged to explore their strengths, take on new challenges and discover what they are capable of. With a strong, supportive community behind them, they grow into confident, resilient, and resourceful young people, ready to shine on stage and wherever life takes them next.
